Last week, the Society for Science and the Public announced that Intel has stopped sponsoring the society's International Science and Engineering Fair, a 70-year-old high school research competition.
Through a global network of local, regional and national science fairs, top students are selected from millions, all who have demonstrated their knowledge of science and engineering to further their understanding of the world and improve the way we work and live. Intel Ending Sponsorship Of Prestigious Science Contest For High School Students : The Two-Way Intel has been the corporate sponsor of the Science Talent Search since 1998. The Regeron Science Talent Search is the oldest science and math competition specifically for high school seniors. Intel’s news source for media, analysts and everyone curious about the company. The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, a program of Society for Science & the Public, is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition. As we celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Intel Foundation, we also look toward its future, and how we can address our growing concern with the widening gap in access to technology. In this competition, students showcase original research in science and math areas. Three hundred semifinalists are awarded $2,000, along with $2,000 to be donated to their high schools to support STEM education. From May 12 to 17, 2019, more than 1,800 young scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs and makers will come to Phoenix to share their projects and compete for approximately $5 million in awards and scholarships.Intel believes that young people are the key to future innovation. The top 300 applicants are announced in mid-January and since 2017 each semifinalist and their school receives $2,000 from the title sponsor.Since the beginning of the competition, students from New York have done very well in the Science Talent Search, although there have been finalists from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and Guam. Reliable online records of the high schools attended by semifinalists and finalists are only available since 1999, when Intel took over sponsorship of the Science Talent Search, although there are newspaper articles naming the finalists from earlier years.Four specialized STEM schools top the list, averaging more than 8 semifinalists per year: In 2020, due to the seriousness of the coronavirus pandemic, Society for Science & The Public and Regeneron have decided to hold the finalist week as a virtual competition in lieu of traveling to Washington D.C.Entrants to the competition conduct original research—sometimes at home and sometimes by "working with leading research teams at universities, hospitals and private laboratories. Of the 1,750 high school seniors who entered the Intel Science Talent Search 2016, 300 were announced as semifinalists in January. "Each year, approximately 1,800 papers are submitted. In addition to collaborating with Society for Science & the Public on the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair for more than 20 years, a commitment that continues through 2019, Intel has invested millions in education initiatives over the past decade to ensure more students have a solid foundation in science, technology, engineering and math, which are crucial for success. In 2019 and beyond, we will continue to invest in programs and partnerships that bring technology experiences, skills and tools for innovation to underserved youth in the U.S. and around the world.
