And what is better than pleasing Allah? But he did not. His success in these ten years had been rather modest, limited as it was to the conversion of fewer than 170 men and women in Makkah. The Khazraj chiefs, who were tired of their deep-rooted disputes and conflicts with the Aws tribe, felt that Islam was exactly what they needed, and so they most willingly submitted to Islam.When the Khazrajis, who had become Muslim, were about to return to Yathrib, they asked the Holy Prophet of Islam for a missionary, and he assigned Mas'ab ibn `Umir to accompany them. After a decade of preaching in Makkah, the Prophet ﷺ had lost his uncle and his wife and was still rejected by tribesmen. The Holy Prophet embraced him most affectionately, blessed his hurt legs with the saliva from his own mouth which healed 'Ali's swollen legs. The Holy Prophet of Islam was well aware of the fact that people who were plunged in prejudice, superstition, and ignorance would not abandon their beliefs and ways easily and that it would take extensive struggle, severe hardships, and sincere self-sacrifice to save them from the pit of corruption and guide them onto the path of virtue and monotheism. Muhammad S.A.W kept this journey a secret because he was not sure about its success. The nearest city was Ta’if, 70 miles in the south-east of Makkah, and he went there in late 619. It has its setbacks and failures. They considered it their duty to defend the defenseless.The failure at Ta’if was utterly heart-breaking for the Prophet, and he knew that but for the heroic intervention of Mutim ibn Adiy, he might not have been able to enter Makkah at all.
