There weren’t may people on trail today. Green, cool early in the morning, birds, butterflies and a creek. Can be a little confusing a couple times as to which way to go, but still worth it. Agreed with others - parking can get busy if you are there on the weekend.
Strava has the elevation gain at about 1400ft vs 2400 it says on the app but it’s a true 8 miler to the top and back. But I’ll keep my eyes open next time I visit. Once the extreme fire hazards have passed, the Forest Service will re-open these areas.
Trail head is up towards the campground (across the street over the bridge from the parking). There used to be a sink hole into which all or most of the water from Horton disappeared. I don’t remember how far upstream from the confluence it was.
I have a feeling I wasn’t missing much. Horton Creek Campground. The views are nice, but not worth the hike up. The many butterfly’s hanging out on the clusters of flowers along the trail was one of my favorite things.
You’ll be disappointed if you go expecting views of the surrounding areas.

Beautiful areas to stop and dip in the cold creek water. Gets way over crowded. We started the ascent to the rim, took in some views about a half mile from the end of the trail and turned around.
Very well kept. After you pass the first gate, stay on the trail to the right for more shade and hiking closer to the creek.
