Unlike almost every other repeating shotgun on the market, the Mossberg’s shell lifter only lowers for an instant during the loading cycle when the slide is all the way to the rear. If that doesn’t remind you of a trench gun the nothing will. These guns perform as good as they look. As I said earlier, model 590 has a thick barrel, steel trigger, and safety while 500 integrates a plastic made safety and trigger. It’s not an issue with the gun and won’t affect function, but guys coming from Ithaca 37’s or 870 Wingmasters may find it odd. The Mossberg Model 500 features an ambidextrous safety located at the top of the receiver where a shooter’s thumb naturally rests when firing the 500. Additionally, there is no risk of having your thumb or glove caught between the shell lifter and magazine since it rests up and out of the way.Most Mossberg defense shotguns also incorporate a fully ambidextrous safety located on the tang of the receiver. They both function perfectly, of course, and no one is forcing you to load 3 1/2" shells.
Federal FliteControl is my absolute favorite shotgun load and I’m glad it works well in the Retrograde series. This prevents debris from being able to accumulate inside the receiver and also helps make loading easier.
The model 500 Mossberg is a particular style introduced in 1961 by O.F.Mossberg & Sons. The Mossberg Retrograde series premiered in late 2018 with the original Mossberg 500 and their premier fighting shotgun, the Mossberg 590A1. The 590 variant has a blued finish that is more subdued and matte in design. Keep in mind this is the 500 and 590 series, and not the 590A1, which also has a Retrograde model available. The Mossberg 500 typically retails for about $329.99.
The slide release on all models is located just behind the trigger guard on the left side of the gun and can be easily manipulated with the firing hand as well. The 590A1 comes in various configurations with or without a bayonet mount, various finishes, and barrel lengths between 10.5 inches and 20 inches. The biggest changes include a metal trigger guard, safety button, and a heavy wall barrel. 15 yards is a long-range for a home defense shotgun, but if you took a shot at that range you could have confidence in the fact that it would hit where you were aiming. Who doesn’t love shotguns with wood furniture? The ergonomics are quite retro, but they are also modern. The Mossberg 500 Retrograde was lighter but not necessarily quicker on target.
