AMDは先週より、Propusコアを採用する「Athlon II X4」シリーズの販売を開始している。それについては 本日発表されたTDP 45W版のAthlon II X4投入については、AMD本社プロダクトマーケティング担当副社長のレスリー・ソボン氏が来日した際に行なわれたプレスカンファレンスにおいて、その存在が公式に表明された(図1)。これらはSFF(Small Form Factor)や液晶一体型のフォームファクタを対象としてはいるものの、低消費電力に対するニーズはこうしたフォームファクターに限ったことではなく、単体発売されることを歓迎するユーザも多いのではないだろうか。 AMDはこれまでにもTDP 45Wの製品を投入してきた。しかし、いずれも旧Athlon(つまりK8コア)の製品で、Phenom(K10)アーキテクチャを採用した製品としては初めての製品となる。この点も大きなポイントといえる。 各製品の使用は表1にまとめたとおりだ。Athlon II X4 605e(写真1、画面1)は、L3キャッシュレスのクアッドコアであるPropusコアを用いたもので、動作クロックは2.3GHz。最大動作電圧が1.2VとTDP 95W製品比べて低く抑えられている。AMDが提示する参考価格は14,980円となっており、Athlon II X4のほかの2製品に比べると、プレミアを付けた価格になっている。 それではベンチマーク結果を紹介したい。本製品の場合、性能よりも消費電力に重きを置く製品ではあるのだが、どの程度の性能を出せるかはざっくりとでも確認しておきたい。ここでは、前回テストしたAthlon II X4 630の結果を流用し、そこで取り上げたCPUとの相対的な性能を見てみることにしたい。テスト環境は表2、使用マザーボードは写真3～4のとおりである。 では、順に結果を追っていく。CPU性能を見る、Sandra 2009 SP4のProcessor Arithmetic/Processor Multi-Media Benchmark(グラフ1)、PassMark Performance Test 7のCPU Test(グラフ2)、PCMark05のCPU Test(グラフ3～4)。そして、メモリ性能を見るSandra 2009のCache & Memory Benchmark(グラフ5)とPCMark05のMemory Latency Test(グラフ6)の結果から確認していきたい。 2.3GHz動作のAthlon II X4 605eは、2.8GHz動作のAthlon II X4 630に対して、18%ほど遅いクロックで動作しており、同じアーキテクチャでもあることから、この差ははっきり表れている。クロック差が結果に素直に反映されるSandraのCPUベンチの結果も、おおよそ18%ほど低いスコアに落ち着いているほか、ややバラつきの見られるPassMarkのスコアは小さいところでも10%程度のスコア差が出る結果となった。 メモリ周りはキャッシュの性能でクロック差が表れている格好だ。レイテンシもクロックが低いために絶対的な性能は低くなっている。参考までにレイテンシのクロック数を計算してみると、Athlon II X4 605eの4KBテスト結果のレイテンシタイムは約1.3ns、192KBは約6.76ns。動作クロックが2.3GHzなので、4KBテストで約3クロック、192KBテストで約15.5クロックということになる。Athlon II X4 630はレイテンシタイムが4KBで約1.07ns、192KBで約5.6ns。動作クロックが2.8GHzなので4KBで約3クロック、192KBで約15.7クロックということになり、どちらも似たようなクロック数であることが分かる。メインメモリの速度、レイテンシも似たような性能を見せており、メモリ周りに関してクロック差によるキャッシュの性能差はあるが、素行はほぼ同じということになる。 次にアプリケーションベンチと3Dベンチの結果を見てみたい。テストは、PCMark Vantage(グラフ7)、CineBench R10(グラフ8)、POV-Ray(グラフ9)、ProShow Gold(グラフ10)、TMPGEnc 4.0 XPressによる動画エンコード(グラフ11)、3DMark06(グラフ12、13)、BIOHAZARD 5 ベンチマーク(グラフ14)、ストリートファイターIV ベンチマーク(グラフ15)、FINAL FANTASY XI for Windows - Vana'diel Bench 3(グラフ16)である。 ここもAthlon II X4 630とのクロック差はいかんともしがたい結果になっている。3Dベンチでは同等程度の結果も見られるが、これはグラフィック機能の側がボトルネックになるためである。前回も触れたとおりL3キャッシュを持たないAthlon II X4自体があまりゲーム向きのCPUではないわけで、ここでAthlon II X4 630と似た結果が出ても、どのみちインパクトはない。 一方、Phenom II X3 720 BEとの差は面白い。多くのテストではPhenom II X3 720 BEのほうが良い結果を出しているが、一部テストでこれを上回る結果が出ている。クロック差以上にコア数が多いことによる並列処理性の高さが好結果につながったことになる。限られたシーンではあるものの、こうした性能差が見られるのは興味深いポイントといえる。 また、Core 2 Quad Q8200と比較しても大部分のテストでは後塵を拝する結果になっているが、動画エンコードではより高速に処理できる傾向がある。この点は本製品の魅力として捉えることができる。 さて、最後に肝心の消費電力測定結果である(グラフ17)。アイドル時は、それほど大きな差がない。ほかのPhenomアーキテクチャ製品と同じく、動作クロックの下限が800MHzであることが理由と考えられる。 しかし負荷をかけた際の消費電力はさすがに低い。TDP 95WのPhenomアーキテクチャ両製品よりも低く抑えられているのはもちろんのこと、Core 2 Quad Q8200よりも低い消費電力に収まっている。このインパクトは大きい。 少し駆け足ではあったが、Athlon II X4 605eの性能と消費電力を見てきた。性能はAthlon II X4 630に対してクロック相応に低いが、消費電力は非常に低く抑えられている。この製品の存在価値は低消費電力かつクアッドコアであるというところであり、その点で確かな魅力を持った製品になっている。 対Intelの視点でも、ライバル的存在となるCore 2 Quad Q8200に対して、全体的な性能はやや劣るが、動画エンコードでは高速に処理でき、消費電力はより低いといった性格を見せている。ニーズに応じて選べる選択肢になるだろう。 Socket AM3は今年登場したばかりだが、半年強でラインナップが一気に充実した。2月のSocket AM3登場がホップ、6月のラインナップ拡充がステップ。そして、今回のAthlon II X4とTDP 45W版登場はジャンプであると筆者は考えている。もちろんこれで着地するという意味ではなく、Socket AM3の飛躍につながる製品だと思うからだ。 それだけ、この製品はSocket AM3プラットフォームにとって存在感が大きい。PC向けCPUとしては最上位モデルから45Wの低消費電力版、3万円以下からバリューセグメントまでをカバーする価格面での小刻みな製品ラインナップが、Socket AM3という統一したプラットフォームで提供されることになるからである。Socket AM3のスケーラビリティをアピールするうえで、今回の製品は重要な意味を持ってくるだろう。

The performance value for many CPUs was determined from more than 10 different real-world tests and synthetic benchmarks. The table below shows aggregate multi-threaded performance of the microprocessor compared to other Socket AM2+ / Socket AM3 microprocessors with the same type of architecture. I must change my cpu or it wul be supported?
