State Route 188 closed north of Roosevelt Lake : PHOENIX – State Route 188 is closed in both directions north of Roosevelt Lake at milepost 253, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
Update 1:35 p.m. State Route 87 has reopened in both directions between Payson and the Valley after an extended closure prompted by the Bush Fire, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation. The original route was constructed in 1904 as a wagon road, to provide access to Roosevelt Dam during construction of the dam.
Between Claypool and Lake Roosevelt is an old loop road labelled "Old Highway 88"; originally State Route 88 continued down 188 from Lake Roosevelt to US 60 at Claypool.

State Route 88 (SR 88) is a 45.67 mi (73.50 km) long state highway in the U.S. state of Arizona.It runs from U.S. Route 60 (US 60) in Apache Junction through desert terrain to SR 188 near Roosevelt Dam.Following the Salt River for much of its length, the section east of Tortilla Flat is known as the Apache Trail and is part of the National Forest Scenic Byway system. In 1990, the new bridge crossing Roosevelt Lake opened (as part of the project to raise Roosevelt Dam to handle flood capacity).Arizona 188 travels between Arizona 87 near Jakes Corner and U.S. 60 near Globe, meeting Arizona 88 at Roosevelt Dam after crossing Roosevelt Lake.Arizona 188 was added to the state highway system in 1959 between Roosevelt Dam and Jakes Corner (Arizona 87). In the 1920s, the road was widened to handle automobiles, with a final reroute completed by 1936 to take the road around Canyon Lake and Apache Lake.The road remains in the same condition as it was in 1936. Return to Arizona State Routes Return to Arizona Roads. Turn right (east) onto FR 143 and continue 28 miles to State Route 188 near Theodore Roosevelt Lake. The closure spans about 55 miles. Large sections of the road are unpaved or lack guardrails, so patience — along with a light foot on the accelerator — is a must.
